Intermodal competition in local telecommunications markets

Article Abstract:

A Cournot framework is presented to examine the effects of wireless service and high-speed connections on the competition between Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers (ILECs) and Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLECs) in local telecommunication markets. The results indicate that the wireless and high-speed services adversely affect ILEC lines.

Extending the discussion on damaged goods to markets with network externalities, the impact of network externalities on a monopolist's incentive for quality degradation and its welfare consequence are examined. The software and Internet service industries exhibit the practice of quality degradation.
