Entry in the telecommunication: Customer loyalty, price sensitivity, and access prices

Article Abstract:

The prospects for the entry into an existing network in the telecommunication industry is investigated and the ways public policy may promote a more competitive outcome are discussed. A model is applied to capture the fact that the incumbent has an installed base of loyal consumers, their price sensitivity, and the access fees charged for entering in the network.

A hypothesis regarding the success or failure of regulatory initiatives, based on a review of these initiatives, is developed. The other sources of competition and focus on deregulatory actions that could unblock alternative technologies that would bring competition to this market are also considered.

Article Abstract:

Explanation on the late take-off phenomenon in the diffusion of telecommunication services, using the diffusion theory in marketing, is presented. Comparison of parameters of the diffusion process of consumer durables with those of fax services in the US and Korea is discussed.
