Article Abstract:

A number of significant developments have taken place recently in relation to the free movement of services, goods, capital and persons within the European Union's internal market. The European Commission has adopted a regulation under which it will be able to take rapid action in conflicts that impede crossborder transporters' routes and access to markets. The European Commission also plans to propose legislation in 1999 to deal with restrictions on investments by funded supplementary pension funds. The proposed European company statute would create a new legal form for business.

Article Abstract:

Single market conditions in the European Union are progressing to varying degrees. Italy and Austria are soon to become part of the Schengenland national authorities communications network in Europe. Moves to standardise laws on bankruptcy was temporarily halted in May. 1997 when the British government failed to give its agreement to convention plans. Other matters are discussed including European Commission competition policy.

Issues are presented concerning the integration of the countries of the European Union with particular reference to company law, the freedom of movement, competition, intellectual property, taxation, public procurement, technical harmonisation and state aid.
