The Continuing Care Retirement Community as a consumer information issue

Article Abstract:

Choosing to live in a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) is an important decision for older people and must be made based on knowledge about fees, services, tax benefits and personal lifestyles. Some CCRCs are eligible for the real estate roll-over purchase tax deduction and some are arranged to generate health payment tax deductions for residents. The cost and level of long term care needs to be considered as well as the financial position of the CCRC as a non-profit, for-profit or subsidiary organization. Refunds of monthly maintenance fees are also available at some CCRCs.

Communicating with worried older clients: the impact of "generational diversity."

Article Abstract:

Most people believe that differences in financial worries found between younger and older people are solely a result of the aging process and maturation. However, an alternate or influencing cause may be the education background and other social factors prevalent in the pre-World War II historical period. Financial planners should not dismiss financial fears because their clients are older, but rather should try to understand the underlying influences on their fear.

Geriatric assisted living: "when mom and dad can't live alone anymore."

Article Abstract:

A fictitious letter from a son to his mother illustrates the factors to be considered in choosing geriatric assisted living arrangements. Assisted living facilities provide advantages over traditional board and care and nursing homes, such as hotel-style living spaces and meals, large staffs, non-intrusive monitoring, and personal independence. Financial decisions on living arrangements must be made as family decisions.
