The commodization of information through computer technology has benefits for the insurance industry in that more information is readily available. New agents and underwriters can learn faster when aided by a computerized mentor. However, life insurance sales are unlikely to change significantly because the purchase is still based on emotion and procrastination more than on tangible facts. Though the number of direct buyers may increase, it is more likely to happen with home, auto and other insurance types that are required or bought automatically.

Professionals may learn to create computer files on DOS-based systems by following a few simple steps. Files are places for information storage. Creation of files allows for other functions to be performed such as the cut and paste function where information or documents can be transferred from one document to another.
