Article Abstract:
National Collegiate Athletic Ass'n v. Smith is a Title IX sex discrimination challenge slated for oral arguments in the US Supreme Court on Jan 20, 1999, and Renee Smith, a lawyer/volleyball player, hopes the 3d Circuit ruling that the NCAA can be sued even though it does not receive federal funds will be upheld. The NCAA counters this would mean many private organizations whose members receive federal dollars might also face such liability. The NCAA challenge is the second Title IX case of the Supreme Court's 1998-99 term.
