Security Regulation: A State-By-State Update

Article Abstract:

Private security is a major growth industry in the United States. Most growth and revenue in the industry are in security guard services, alarm system contractors and private detective services. Many public policy issues arise from these industrial areas. The public policy issues can be resolved through public regulation and control. State regulation of the three major private security areas was examined in a study. Licensure surfaces as the main remedy to public policy conflicts with private security. However, most state legislators are opposed to regulating these three private security areas with licensure.

Article Abstract:

The future of the security industry will be affected by technological growth, governmental actions, social change and economic fluctuations. Computerized security systems and solid-state technology will increase security efficiency. Government's curtailing of funds for law enforcement programs will increase the need for private security. Demographic population shifts will cause increased crime in urban areas. The spread of terrorism increases demand for private security. As the American economy becomes more polarized, the wealthy will be seeking their own private security.
