Progress and challenges of privatization: the Croatian experience

Article Abstract:

The privatization of Croatian state-owned businesses has progressed slowly but effectively, despite that country's political turmoil. The major factor behind this relative success in privatization is the effective creation of a legal framework. Starting with laws passed in the 1980s to allow and encourage foreign investment, up to the Company Act and Privatization Act of the 1990s, Croatia has done a good job inching towards a free market economy that would have been unthinkable as recently as 1980. The country's economic history in the 20th century is discussed.

Hong Kong 1997

Article Abstract:

China has already taken steps to undermine democratic and human rights reforms implemented by the outgoing British government in Hong Kong, but China is also aware that Hong Kong's continued prosperity is essential to its own development. Hong Kong's prosperity is already closely tied to China. For years it has operated as a conduit for western investment in China. There is uncertainty about whether this will continue, and westerners will have to endure cultural and social changes, but the economic opportunities that have made Hong Kong unique should continue.
