Issues are discussed regarding the need for real estate lawyers to negotiate with environmental groups, zoning officials and politicians from adjacent communities in their efforts to curb urban sprawl. Smart-growth measures are the catch-word advocates of well-thought-out urban growth use and critics argue such measures result in increased housing costs, thus shutting out all but wealthy families.

Divorcing couples are adding more tort claims to the standard demands for alimony and equitable property distribution. Philadelphia divorce litigator Norman Perlberger states that RICO and fraud suits against spouses guilty of such offenses as hiding assets are increasing throughout the system. Fraudulent inducement to marry, intentional infliction of emotional distress, fraudulent dissipation of marital assets and parental kidnapping are among the common claims.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3d Circuit's ruling in FTC v. Affordable Media has spotlighted the asset protection trusts set up by the wealthy in various banking havens. The 9th Circuit has affirmed a federal district court's contempt citation of the defendants for refusing to comply with an asset repatriation order.
