The themes dominating the cases to be heard by the US Supreme Court in the 2000-2001 term are discussed. These will probably include federalism, freedom of speech, and the Fourth Amendment conditions determining the legality of searches and seizures. Cases on the court's calendar so far are discussed.

The US Supreme Court's three federalism rulings, which barred patent-holders from suits against states for patent infringement in federal court and blocked state employees from suits against states in state courts for federal wage and hour violations, signify the Rehnquist Court's move to revive the authority of state governments has not slowed, nor has that court's move to remind us of our constitutional framework.
