Intra-European Union trade mechanisms are unnecessarily complex, according to expert findings in SLIM (simpler legislation for the internal market) research. The European Commission is looking at ways to reduce excessive bureaucratic processes and improve international standards. It intends to improve legislation involving environmental, energy and common agricultural policy issues. Numerous areas are considered, including border controls, biotechnology, consumer protection, taxation and telecommunications.
