Visioneer's $99.95 PaperPort Deluxe 4.0 scanner-independent program features an elegant interface that establishes it as the standard for image management applications. PaperPort Deluxe 4.0 differs from traditional Paperport since it is completely hardware independent and is not marketed with Paperport scanners. The new software is sold as an individual upgrade or as an add-on for all TWAIN-supporting scanners. PaperPort Deluxe 4.0 runs on Windows 95 and NT and features significant additions to Visioneer's standard Paperport scanned image organizer, including five levels of nested subfolder capabilities. Other innovative features include increased application links and a Scan Direct addition that allows users to scan directly into WordPerfect, Word, 1-2-3, Excel or Netscape. PaperPort is available for current Paperport users as an upgrade for a reduced price of $79.95.

Suggestions by three lawyers for sending and receiving Internet e-mail in a law firm using an outdated DOS PC network are presented. Dan Coolidge maintains that upgrading to a current system would immediately solve the Internet connection issues. Ross Kodner, however, advises the law firm to upgrade its WordPerfect Office 3.01 to the more contemporary Groupwise 4.1 Mailbox for DOS. Kodner maintains that this solution would provide the firm with a modern e-mail application that includes the Groupwise Async Gateway NLM and the Message Server NLM. Bruce Dorner concurs with Kodner, citing Groupwise's ability to continue utilizing the firms existing DOS system while enhancing calendaring, scheduling and e-mail features. Dorner also maintains that the upgrade process of the existing e-mail and WordPerfect Office calendars to Groupwise is easily configured.
