Article Abstract:
There are a number of considerations for law firms considering hiring lateral partners. The amount of business they would bring with them is important, but prospective lateral hires' estimates on this score should be taken with a grain of salt as they often underestimate the difficulty of getting clients to change firms. There are various ways of determining compensation and status, but the hiring firm should remember that it takes longer than expected for the new partner to generate revenue. Reference-checking is essential in order to learn about personality and experience.

Article Abstract:
Post-Cold War downsizing at the nation's largest defense firms is unlikely to cost many corporate counsels their jobs. Layoffs and contract disputes over cancelled weapons systems will keep in-house attorneys busy, and may even result in work for outside counsel. Of ten major contractors surveyed, only United Technologies Corp plans a significant reduction in its legal staff. In the long run, however, the shrinking defense industry will need less lawyers.

Article Abstract:
The Sixth Annual National Law Guide to the Legal Search Profession gives a survey of 225 legal recruiters, 49 fewer than in 1991, a drop apparently caused by the recession. Although 1991 represented the worst year recruiters had seen in terms of income and number of placements, 85% are expecting a better 1992. Entries under each state are arranged alphabetically, first by larger cities within the states, then by smaller locations.
