Article Abstract:
Several child abuse suits filed in a Georgia court have drawn attention to a trend of suits by adults for sexual abuse when they were children. Memories of the abuse are often retrieved as a result of psychotherapy. Georgia law states that suits for such abuse must be filed by the time the plaintiff becomes 23 years of age. Recognizing that memories of sexual abuse can be triggered many years later, several state legislatures have stated that the statute of limitations should not begin to run until the abuse is recalled.

James Leroy Cornelius is on trial in Georgia for child molestation and kidnapping, but he contends that his cross-country trip with a 12-year old girl was motivated by a desire to help her by removing her from her abusive family. The defense also contends there is insufficient evidence that the girl was held against her will.
