Gavel and Gown Software's Amicus Attorney IV case-management application includes several useful enhancements. There are now three versions of Amicus Attorney: Organizer Edition, Advanced Edition and Client/Server Editions. Organizer ($49) is designed for single users and includes the essential case-management tools. The Advanced Edition ($299) is a network version for up to 29 users and includes synchronization with Palm organizers. The Client/Server ($499) version handles up to 200 networked users. The Call Center is improved in version IV and its right-click menu is quite useful.

Gavel and Gown Software's $199-per-station Amicus Telephone telephone management software automatically tracks the number of minutes spent on every phone call, adding a chronological record of every call to each client's computer file. In addition to call's duration, the phone call record includes the name of the person who accepted the call, information typed into the computer's telephone slip and whether an attorney needs to call the client back. Amicus Telephone uses the TAPI interface and works well on Comdial telephone systems with Caller ID capacities, as well as other telephone systems listed in the manual. Office computers may need extra COM ports to hook into the TAPI device.

Timing is all in evaluating when law offices need to upgrade software systems. Software does not necessarily need to be upgraded every six or 12 months, according to the vendor's product life cycle. However, mission-critical applications, such as time-and-billing software and accounting systems, should likely be upgraded as often as possible because any downtime or data loss would be intolerable. Also, the newer the software, the more reliable and accurate the vendor's support. Various law office software programs may be interdependent, so that upgrading one system may require upgrading the other to ensure compatibility. Similarly, if primary systems are upgraded, secondary systems may need to be upgraded to ensure compatibility.
