Article Abstract:
New technologies mean that users must learn new ways of protecting information. When sending e-mail, users should always check the list of those copied on the original message, instead of replying indiscriminately to the entire list. Some programs allow users to set the Reply button so that messages return only to the sender. A direct Internet connection will speed the sending and receiving of e-mail messages, but it poses a significant hazard unless a firewall is in place to prevent unauthorized access. Users should keep installation disks and manuals for all new programs, in case configuration problems force them to re-install the program. Tape backups should be checked routinely to ensure that the tape drive is working. Users should employ caution when trying to remove Windows programs, since new Windows programs affect many areas of the hard drive. Tips for maintaining Internet privacy, protecting notebook computers and preserving data are also included.

Article Abstract:
Computers are becoming essential in industry and many liability claims and contract disputes have arisen, but courts have yet to establish a standard method to settle cases involving information and computer technology. Such cases can be tried under many different liability theories including breach of contract, strict product liability, negligence, breach of express or implied warranty or professional malpractice. However, whether information technology and systems are products or services has yet to be determined, which causes many different rulings on legal liability.
