Article Abstract:
This article examines post-apartheid South Africa, its business communities, and its international economic relations. The author argues that South Africa, the economic leader of their continent, is not performing as well economically and socially as most think, and maintains that South Africa's international relations are too complex to forecast their future economic policies.

South Africa's foreign policy conducted under President Nelson Mandela is united under the presidency of Thabo Mbeki. The five policy themes including, Africa and Africanist, democracy and respect for human rights, holistic understanding of security, a pacific approach to conflict resolution and multilateralism are outlined.

The promises and pitfalls of the international companies and civil society groups, which are the two competing approaches to industries in South Africa, are discussed. It is stated that a multi-level approach is necessary to the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and corporate accountability initiatives.
