Islamic politics, human rights and women's claims for equality in Iran

Article Abstract:

The diverse currents of thinking that feed into the reformist orientation in Iran are analyzed. The need for change is being voiced not only by secular forces but also by true believers of the Islamic establishment including male lay intellectuals, clerical authorities and feminists who are trying to move Islamic politics out of its narrow traditional path by endorsing modernist and universal values of human rights and democracy, but their political impact has proved to be far from significant, because of domestic and external factors.

Between the hammer and the anvil: Post-conflict reconstruction, Islam and women's rights

Article Abstract:

A study analyzing how the nature of emerging political settlements in Afghanistan and Iraq, places of high risk and insecurity, can jeopardize stated international commitments to women's rights agenda is illustrated. Illustrations from the constitutional and electoral processes in post-Taliban Afghanistan and post-occupation Iraq show how democracy by design can consolidate and legitimize social forces that are likely to resist the equal participation of women in civic, political and economic life.

Liberalisation and the debates on women's access to land

Article Abstract:

The study was undertaken to examine the allocation of land in a patriarchal society and assessing the gender bias that was involved. Results revealed that this situation could be beneficial to organizations averse to women's rights.
