Some salty advice: batten down

Article Abstract:

Hurricane forecaster and Colorado State University professor William Gray predicts a busy hurricane season for 1997, with 11 storms making landfall in the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Seven of these are forecast to develop into hurricanes, with three predicted to have maximum sustained winds of at least 111 mph. However, the 1997 season appears quieter than 1995 and 1996, which saw 19 and 13 storms, respectively. Gray examines a range of factors in his meteorological models to come up with his forecasts, including rainfall in sub-Saharan Africa, ocean salinity, barometric readings around the Azores and the El Nino phenomenon.

Ratings, regulation explored at insurer conferences

Article Abstract:

A number of experts attending two conferences, one sponsored jointly by Coopers and Lybrand and the other by the Institute for International Research, offered property and casualty insurers advice on financial ratings. Topics included: the negative impact of media attention on rating downgrades, Best's revised rating structure, and risk-based capital standards. Speakers included Stanley B. Tulin, of Coopers and Lybrand; Larry G. Mayewski, of A.M. Best; and Patrick W. Kenny, of Aetna Life and Casualty Co.

Managing P/C health care costs

Article Abstract:

Medical costs are expected to make up over 50% of workers' compensation costs by the year 2000, up from 30% earlier in the century. High medical costs can be controlled by identifying potential health hazards, detecting fraud and carefully monitoring disability cases to maximize rehabilitation and minimize costs. In addition, liability cases should be investigated and assessed quickly so that questionable expenses are not given time to arise.
