Health insurers that underwrite disability insurance and other policies that can benefit from rehabilitation/case management programs should consider expanding these programs. The goal of these programs is to provide cost-effective care to people with disabilities who have special rehabilitation and medical needs. A Health Association of America survey found that rehabilitation/case management programs produced $30 of savings for every $1 invested, using data collected from disability lines from 1991 to 1993.

All insurance industries assume some risk of professional liability for errors and omissions (E&O) on the part of the agents who handle it. Disability income insurance has been the most common subject of E&O claims. A few tips on how to avoid errors and omissions in selling disability income policies are presented. It involves proper client selection, revision od\f existing policies, application of business accuracy and sufficient policy orientation.

Corporations may experience increased claims for long-term disability insurance when large numbers of employees are terminated in the restructuring process. Management must prepare a team strategy to handle such claims without denying coverage to deserving employees. Advance programs to assist employees before termination can ease costs and other problems. Examples experienced by CNA Insurance Co illustrate these points.
