Mad cow panic leaves prices stagnating

Article Abstract:

UK government bond prices have been affected by concern over bovine spongiform encephalopathy since government borrowing is likely to increase and the economy as a whole will be affected. Compensation for farmers means borrowing more, which in turn means that taxes cannot be reduced by as much and the ruling Conservative party is less likely to be re-elected. Imports will increase, affecting the balance of trade, and damage to the beef and dairy industry affect gross domestic product.

It's time to end the insanity

Article Abstract:

UK farmers turned cattle into cannibals in order to increase profits. Some customers have died, and the famers want compensation. There is little debate as to why taxpayers should compensate farmers. Companies in other industries are not paid for not killing customers. The farmers should decide on a solution and fund it themselves. Prices of lamb and other meat have risen, but farmers expect to keep these gains. Farmers should face competition like businesses in other industries.

The outrageous risk from BSE

Article Abstract:

There is no certain estimate as to the danger of developing Creutzfeld Jacob disease (CJD) from eating meat infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The risk appears to be low, yet there is widespread public concern. There are a number of reasons for this. There are alternatives to eating beef, and people are less prepared to take on risks when they do not feel in control. There is also a strong reaction to the notion that an industry has behaved improperly.
