Article Abstract:
A growing number of insurance companies are establishing a presence on the Internet. However, their use of the Internet rarely extends beyond creating home pages to provide prospective customers with corporate overviews, product descriptions and agent directories. Most insurers have not grasped the functional opportunities presented by the Internet. Industry experts believe the Internet could serve as an ideal platform for carrying information-intensive business processes that have traditionally been ascribed only to mainframe computers.

There are several sites on the Internet for individuals interested in political information. Election coverage on the World Wide Web is offered by several joint ventures. The Cable News Network and Time; Newsweek, ABC News and the Washington Post and the Microsoft Network and NBC News have teamed up to provide election information. Congressional information is provided on the CapWeb site and the Yahoo search site.

Many insurance executives do not expect the Internet to be used for electronic transactions because of the lack of security. Security is important to insurance and financial services firms because of the confidential information that they deal with and these firms offer confidentiality as a major reason to do business with them.
