Article Abstract:
The Illinois Insurance Exchange is a combination of 14 syndicates that provide the same services as property and casualty insurers. Founded by the Illinois legislature in 1982 to provide surplus insurance, the Exchange has successfully weathered the recession by emphasizing profits over volume - that is, by concentrating on lines where it has special expertise. The Exchange is also licensed by the state of Illinois and is approved in 37 other states, a feature that gives it a decided advantage over its nonadmitted competitors.

Travelers Corp has successfully implemented a wireless local area network to reduce the cost of medical claims processing. Tested in a Manchester, CT, high school work-study program, the system is 802.5 compatible and uses infrared LED optical links between satellites and a sun base. The Manchester program has had an added benefit: it has provided Travelers with a pool of prospective workers.
