Elephant hunt: big-game attorneys target insurers

Article Abstract:

The insurance industry is increasingly becoming a target for class-action lawsuits, as both life/health and property/casualty insurers come under fire for dubious business practices. Prudential Insurance Company of America is embroiled in a class-action suit which has cost the insurer $410 million in initial settlements, and New York Life Insurance Co. has paid out $65 million. Both cases are ongoing as of 1997. The tarnished reputation of the insurance industry makes it an easy target for lawyers prepared to manipulate already unsympathetic jurors.

Two's a crowd

Article Abstract:

Insurance companies and claims databases users may eventually have to choose between the National Insurance Crime Bureau's (NICB) ClaimSmart and American Insurance Services Group's (AISG) all-claims database. The insurance industry can only support one database. However, both NICB and AISG are industry-owned organizations and supporting one or the other should not be the issue. A joint venture between AISG and NICB may be the industry's best option.
