A second phase of smaller demutualizations, taking the form of sponsored demutualizations, might occur after the recovery of the economy and the equity markets. The firms having managerial skills and financial fortitude would use dematualization to acquire other firms to increase their growth rates and remain competitive.

The political and economic instability, war with Iraq, declining equity values, and the decaying corporate credit quality have brought the United States life insurance industry under severe pressure. The affect of these forces on the industry and the consequences experienced henceforth are analyzed.
