Insurance industry information officers are faced with rapid changes in technology and employee skill requirements. They must learn to manage the changes by adopting a strategy of development rather than maintenance. Technical employees will need analytical skills to provide services in the client/server structures, but many insurers are still working with mainframe systems. The hierarchical management structure is less productive than a team approach that allows a freer exchange of information.

Insurance industry chief information officers must find ways to keep their personnel trained and capable of adapting to rapidly-changing technologies. Many companies work with old mainframe systems that are inflexible. New client/server systems will require all employees to know how to use the company's information system. Information systems employees must learn new technology, update that knowledge constantly, and be able to communicate with users of the technology.
