There has been a remarkable increase in the number of benefits programs with managed care characteristics for the past two years. Many employers treat managed care to be a prearranged system of providers given to employees in their benefits program although managed care includes several programs. There are several managed-care programs that abound such as the traditional health maintenance organizations (HMO), point of service programs, open-ended HMOs and the preferred provider organizations.

Outcomes research is an expensive but definitely important research method whose aim is to quantify the effect of treatment compared with the natural course of untreated illness. It also analyzes new treatments and competing treatments. This method can also be used to determine cost-related inquiries regarding specific treatments. Thus, employers will also be able to formulate better and more effective benefits plans.

Medical savings accounts are employer-funded, tax-exempt accounts used for health care expenses. Such accounts promote provider competition, offer incentives for individual efforts to maintain health and allow patients to choose their preferred physicians. However, they could lead to higher overall health care expenditures for employers, insurers and the federal government.
