Both private passenger and commercial automobile insurance lines registered strong performances in 1994, with combined ratios of 105.7 and 108.8 respectively. Direct premiums climbed 4.5% to $116.4 billion, with major improvement in the private passenger auto segment. State Farm Group led total auto insurance underwriting, with $22.3 billion in 1994 direct premiums, and also the private passenger segment, with $21.7 billion. CNA Insurance Cos led the commercial auto segment, with $706 million in direct 1994 premiums.

Financial results for property/casualty companies' workers' compensation insurance lines improved dramatically in 1994 thanks to progressive reform efforts. Underwriting losses declined to $509 million in 1994 from $2.24 billion in 1993. The workers' compensation combined ratio after policyholder dividends declined to 101.4 in 1994 from 109.1 in 1993. Incurred losses declined to $17.07 billion in 1994 from $21.7 billion in 1993.

Catastrophe losses reached $16 billion in 1994, the second highest year in losses after 1992 when losses reached $22 billion because of Hurricanes Iniki and Andrew. Homeowners' insurance premiums increased to $24.2 billion in 1994, a growth rate of 6.8%. Homeowners' insurance premiums were responsible for 9.2% of the total volume for the property/casualty insurance industry.
