Article Abstract:
KPMG Peat Marwick LLP conducted a survey on employee health benefit packages for 1994. Data showed that almost 80% of employees in companies with a workforce reaching 200 and above are covered by employer-sponsored health insurance plans, with 65% of them participating in managed care plans. Managed care plans are expected to become the main providers of health care regardless of the presence of federal health care reform legislation, mainly beacuse they offer better cost control.

Article Abstract:
Fortune 500 companies were surveyed to determine the impact of the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) on companies. Results showed that the act has had minimal impact, countering fears prior to its passage. Most of the respondents already had family-friendly leave policies in place before the act was implemented. In addition, employees seldom used the benefits espoused by the act since FMLA-related leaves are basically unpaid.

Health benefits managers will have to respond to changing US demographics. Among the issues they have to face are the ageing of baby boomers in particular and Americans in general, multiculturalism in the work force, rising levels of formal education and the increasing number of nontraditional households. They will have to provide more varied benefits and improve benefits communication.
