The increasing globalisation of economies means that no one country can act in isolation and this would have a significant impact on the health and safety of their workers.

The hazard identification, risk assessments and the preventive measures for those landowners and organizations who own or manage inland water sites, from ponds and streams to canals and rivers, are discussed. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has published comprehensive guidance for risk management of inland water hazards.

Article Abstract:
The findings and the recommendations of the Royal Academy of Engineering on risk management and assessment are discussed. The objective of the reports is to reconcile the differences between 'objective risk' based on scientific measurements and basic engineering principles and 'subjective risk' perceived by the non-technical public at large.
