There is a growing tendency among larger companies in the UK to put many forms of work out to tender. Within this trend, large companies are seeking to reduce their liabilities and losses by expecting high standards from their contractors and suppliers. There is a danger that small businesses that fail to acknowledge the need to meet new standards will fail to gain contracted out work. Indeed, a lack of attention to health and safety issues could create significant difficulties for small businesses.

The European Union Occupational Health and Safety Common Monitoring System is taking a long time to establish because of non-standard monitoring methods and incomplete data sources. The standard system will be used to monitor working conditions and their affects on health, but can not be completed until comparible data can be gathered and agreed on. A Europe-wide survey will be carried out in 1996, to establish more details

Revised standard is breathing new life into RPE programmes

Article Abstract:

The British Standards Institution's publication, entitled 'Guide to Implementing an Effective Respiratory Protection Device Programme', replaces previous guidelines in the use of respiratory protection equipment. The main difference between the new guidelines and those published in 1974 is the use of Assigned Protection Factors as the measure of equipment performance, rather than the use of Nominal Protection Factors.
