The Tipping Point a book by Malcom Gladwell where he argues that small alterations can coalesce to create epidemics of behavioral change could be used to drive a shift for better safety compliance, employees owning responsibility for safe and healthy working and decrease in accidents. Any health and safety professional needs to ensure they have a comprehensive approach to their own health and safety.

The empowerment of the employee can be used as a safety improvement tool in the organization, but the modern management trends towards empowerment at employee level do little to encourage or support the supervisor in this task. The move towards empowerment is irreversible and is regarded as a major step, which leaves both supervisor and employee struggling due to lack of clarity of role expectation.
