The labour relations heritage and lean manufacturing at Fiat

Article Abstract:

Recent research has focused on assessing new developments in work organisation and human resource management policies at car manufacturer Fiat Auto. It was found that the process of innovation of workplace practices at this company is not linear, with unions and some employees resisting the new human resource management policies, which have also encountered difficulties because of existing organisational features and personnel practices. The case of Fiat indicates that the concept of lean manufacturing is interpreted very differently across countries, companies and plants.

HRM in the USA: correcting some British impressions

Article Abstract:

Human resource management in the US is closer to traditional personnel than it is in the UK. The most significant change in focus has been a greater emphasis on psychology. At present, the status of human resource departments is quite low. Similar fluctuations in status have been experienced by UK human resource departments.

Is empowerment really a new concept?

Article Abstract:

The real meaning of the concept of empowerment is investigated. It is suggested that this is a unique concept that cannot be equated directly with any other term, such as self-control or self-leadership. The restricted applicability of empowerment does not limit the value of clarifying the concept.
