Experienced professionals and subject-matter experts (SMEs) are often asked to provide informal training to their less-experienced co-workers. Most of these experts do not have any formal background as professional trainors and it is still uncertain if they generally make effective instructors. Nonetheless, it is possible for experienced professionals and SMEs to improve their training skills with appropriate guidance. The Alexander Consulting Group has developed the 'Instructor's Guide' to help 'accidental trainers' design training programs that are job-relevant and effective. The guide enables experts to contribute to the company's bottom line by successfully imparting knowledge to their trainees, and to feel confident in their own training ability.

Inland Steel Bar Co's organizational redesign was implemented in the face of labor unrest, mounting job losses, and falling profits. The results, however, have been impressive. The work environment has changed significantly with employees enjoying a greater role in customer service, quality improvement, and cost-cutting. The success of the program can be attributed to the steel company's decision to involve the union as a partner in planning and implementing the redesign process. A joint union/management committee overseeing the program has helped the steel company transform its operations by optimizing employee skills as part of a broader restructuring plan.

Article Abstract:
Training programs introduce new concepts to managers. The stumbling block comes with implementing the new concepts in individual work situations. By working with and supporting the managers, a personnel department can aid implementation. Steps to take when modifying employees' behavior include rewarding desired behavior, defining specific behaviors desired, giving individuals frequent feedback, reinforcing changed behavior, rewarding teamwork and basing rewards on employee performance.
