Health and safety is often not given the priority it deserves as many senior managers do not see its relevance to key business processes, according to David Eves, deputy director general of the Health and Safety Executive. More enlightened companies recognise that shareholders, customers, suppliers, contractors, as well as employees benefit from good health and safety strategies. The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health has recently introduced Safety for Senior Executives, a course which aims to increase awareness of health and safety by senior managers.

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health is launching a programme in March 1998 dubbed 'Training the Trainer', which aims to teach training delivery to occupational health and safety practitioners. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is explained in the Monitor Training programme, which is aimed at supervisors. The programme covers a wide variety of modern PPE and also the design of safety systems.
