Cash balance plans are mutated pension plans that are treated by U.S. pension law as defined benefit plans, despite their defined contribution plan features. After perusing the feature s of cash balance plans from employer and worker vantage points, the author shows how treating cash balance plans solely as defined benefit plans leads to problems.

The reasons why individuals make errors in managing their pensions in 401(k) plans, the types of errors they make and how errors differ across types of participants and possible policy suggested by understanding participant errors are analyzed.
