Private health insurance in the Republic of Ireland

Article Abstract:

A great majority of Ireland's citizens with cover are insured by the state-sponsored, not-for-profit Voluntary Health Insurance Board. The rest are covered by friendly societies that restrict membership to specific professions. Both types of providers use the principle of community rating, which allows people to obtain coverage by paying the same premium corresponding to a coverage level regardless of age, sex or state of health. Ireland's health insurance market was opened to other insurers on Jul. 1, 1994, when the EC implemented the single market for the insurance industry. The government has taken steps to protect community rating.

The French health insurance industry has expanded over the years as a result of increased acceptance of supplementary health benefits among French. The market is expected to be redistributed among a limited number of operators with an extensive and competent network of health professionals, and with efficient claims management system.
