Article Abstract:
A good training program considers the personality of the employee to be trained. While some employees are comfortable with programs based on textbooks and lectures, others benefit more from participatory learning. Motivation is the key to successful training; when employees believe they will benefit directly from a program, they are more likely to participate. Before deciding on a training program, an employer should identify: benefits expected from training, types of participation necessary, employee expectations and alternatives for employees who are unlikely to benefit from the training program.

Training programs introduce new concepts to managers. The stumbling block comes with implementing the new concepts in individual work situations. By working with and supporting the managers, a personnel department can aid implementation. Steps to take when modifying employees' behavior include rewarding desired behavior, defining specific behaviors desired, giving individuals frequent feedback, reinforcing changed behavior, rewarding teamwork and basing rewards on employee performance.

'Soft-skills,' including problem solving, decision making, and listening, are important skills that are needed for success in business. Recent employee training programs have attempted to address these skills with limited results. Successful soft-skills training is possible, but it requires: making the instruction more than learning a collection of steps; identifying what trainees really need to accomplish; and connecting the training with goals that must be achieved.
