Pluralism in retreat? A comparison of Irish and multinational manufacturing companies

Article Abstract:

The rapidly growing economy of Ireland has encouraged many multinational companies (MNCs) to establish subsidiaries and take advantage of financial aid offered by the Irish government. These MNCs employ 41% of manufacturing workers and have helped reduce Ireland's unemployment figures to 12% by 1995. MNCs tend to have higher productivity, profits and pay higher average wages than their Irish counterparts, suggesting better industrial relations and work ethics. Workers are encouraged to view the success of the company in relation to their own success.

Counterpoising Collectivism: Performance-related Pay and Industrial Relations in Greenfield Sites

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that performance-related pay systems contribute to the dissolution of collectivism among industrial employees. Studies of Irish corporations show a correlation between wages based on performance appraisals and increasing individualization of labor/management relationships. This enables employers to resist the introduction of unions or other forms of collectivist employee activities or empowerment.

A study examining the effect of mew working arrangements on contemporary employment relationship, which remains rooted in the market economies, by surveying white-collar jobs in Ireland, is presented.
