Article Abstract:

An evaluation of the asset allocation approach of pension plans in 11 leading investment markets worldwide is presented. It is concluded that there are significant differences between the average asset allocations in different markets.

The importance of asset liability management in firms is exemplified by its success in the management of Unilever's pension funds. This management approach, as applied at Unilever, involves the use of modeling software and extensive planning and evaluation studies to deal with financial problems. The application of the process in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland, is analyzed.
