Article Abstract:
Office politics can cause anxiety in the workplace. This can lead to the emotional withdrawal of employees because power and aggression, which are part of politics, negatively impact on employee loyalty and identification. Managers can promote loyalty and identification by creating an integrative organizational cultures which support employees' unconscious requirements for intimacy. In order to develop a creative and positive environment, managers must: change corporate norms and values by changing day-to-day activities; reveal the value of work activities to employees; create work environments and incentive systems which allow employees to balance aggressive work with caring work; and encourage employees to find their individual interests in the collective interest through participation in organizational politics.

Article Abstract:
Organizational operating configurations formed over time that influence actions in the marketplace are analyzed. These are shaped by variables in four areas, operating environment, business strategy, human resources practices and senior managers' values and behavior regarding employees. These configurations guide employee behavior, are associated with different levels of organizational effectiveness and are resistant to change. Human resource directors can use them to orchestrate changes to increase organizational competitiveness.

One of the new challenges that the human resources departments will face is planning for labor shortage. This problem is likely to arise with the departure of baby boom generation because of which there will be considerable shortage in the labor market.
