Organizational flexibility in Korean companies: rules and procedures on managerial discretion and employee behaviour

Article Abstract:

Korean management practices are based on Confucius and tend to have a hierarchy, be authoritarian and emphasize loyalty. There is little scope for employee autonomy. A study of 45 Korean companies shows that Western values have begun to have an impact on management practices in Korea but Confucian values still predominate. More formalized rules are needed to limit managerial discretion on recruitment and promotion because managers tend to make decisions based on family or school ties. Having a more flexible organizational structure would enable firms to be more innovative.

Personnel development for dissolving jobs: towards a competency-based approach?

Article Abstract:

Jobs are the central units linking work requirements and personnel, while at the same time they are seemingly dissolving and losing their status as the basic building blocks of organist ions. A study suggests that jobs are structured along two independent lines, formal control and complexity of work tasks and each combination of formalization and complexity gives rise to a different approach to align work and competencies.
