Article Abstract:
The Personnel Journal Optimas Award was created in 1991 to emphasize the importance of excellent human resource management to the entire business community. The award sought to accomplish this by recognizing 10 role models each year who challenge conventional views of personnel managers and activities. Past winners were distinguished as having used creative, unique and bold approaches toward solving specific business challenges. Such achievements included the establishment of a employee information database, a rural health care network and a comprehensive diagnostic tool for the evaluation of corporate acquisitions. However, the award itself, and its rigorous selection process continues to evolve. While the award focused on uniqueness in its first year, 1995 has yielded awardees based on philosophy or vision. The categories for the award remain the same, however, including global outlook, innovation, quality of life, service and general excellence.
