Article Abstract:
The European Parliament voted to abolish the UK's opt-out from the Working Time Directive on 11 May 2005 that is likely to take effect after the revised directive enters into force. If implemented it would mean that employers would have to accept that staff could no longer work more than 48 hours a week on average, and this Directive would restrict the UK's highly flexible labor market and undermine the EU's declared aim to become the most competitive economy by 2010.

The Working Time Regulations (WTR) apply in full to most nonmobile workers and establish three key principles such as, a maximum weekly work limit, night work limits and health assessments for night workers. The rules encompasses the minimum time off of daily 11 hours uninterrupted (12 for young workers), weekly 1 day (2 days for young workers), during 6 hours work 20 minutes rest break and 4 weeks' paid annual leave (including bank holidays).

Keeping in view, this requirement, the role of automated fire doors in emergency escape routes for the disabled is discussed.
