Managing feelings of anxiety can be accomplished through a cognitive behavior management strategy known as stress inoculation. The first step in the process is to locate a quiet, distraction-free environment in which to become physically relaxed. Breathing and exercise techniques are described which are designed to promote relaxation. A state of deep muscle relaxation can result, preparing the individual to enter the inoculation phase. This phase entails pairing mental images with a positive rather than tension-provoking physiological state. Successful use of the stress inoculation technique requires routine practice.

This can range from work organisation, schedules, content of work, uncertainty over job security, relationships at work or the conflict between work and home demands. Many stress management techniques offer coping strategies rather than trying to remove or alter the source of the stress.
