PCs networked through local area networks are a flexible and economic means of information storage, retrieval, and processing when compared with mainframes. LANS are useful in delivering office services and for sharing programs and data. LANs are not constrained by the limited storage capacity of stand-alone PCs. LANs are particularly useful for human resources information systems as programs and data can be stored in a central location and used simultaneously by multiple users. LANs also provides services such as electronic mail, calendars, access to fax services, and group scheduling. The basic components of a LAN are: a network operating system; a network interface card and physical topology; a network file serve; and the cable connecting the PCs to the LAN.

Personnel professionals involved with employee benefits administration are finding that the field of employee benefits management is in a state of flux. What is needed is to establish a basis for systems that can meet present and future needs by understanding technology which is emerging today. It is also important to offer information systems which are integrated so that information is handled by all users in the same fashion. Some technological tools available today include decision support systems and flexible administration systems. Other important goals for benefits managers include making data available to those who need it, and determining the difference between benefits administration and management so that benefits programs can support business goals.

Multidirectional career pathing (MDCP) is a career planning model. The traditional career path is defined by upward movement. MDCP allows for career paths with different directions. It is based on the idea that moving across or down within an organization can be advantageous because it is what an employee or the company needs. People are given credits which can be used to receive training in another area of the company for each year of employment. Downward moves, a manager returning to research as an example, can also be accommodated. Benefits, compensation, and prerequisites must be analyzed before moves are made. MDCP should reduce employee lethargy and improve motivation if it is supported.
