The Czech government announced eight percent hike in minimum wages for employees across the country to enable more purchasing power in line with wages of employees in other European Union countries. The government hopes that its strategy would help in motivating employees to stay on their jobs as well as to increase purchasing power of the employees.

The implications of the proposed hike in minimum wages on pay bargaining and inflation in Spain are discussed. Spanish government is contemplating a 4.5% hike in minimum wages for 2005 as of now and may have to consider a further upward revision thereof if the inflation exceeds the forecasts.
