Article Abstract:
Exemption questions are typically the most difficult questions to resolve under provisions of wage and hour laws such as the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Four types of employees are exempt from FLSA coverage: executives, administrators, professionals, and outside sales staff. For those non-exempt under FLSA, calculation of overtime pay begins with the regular rate. FLSA requires extensive employer record-keeping for all workers, exempt and non-exempt. Pay for travel time is a controversial issue under FLSA, which includes a variety of somewhat technical requirements. Employers should be aware that once they agree to pay travel time for commuting to work or by paying commute time as a matter of practice, they may be obligated by law to continue the practice. As a general rule, however, travel time between work and home is not compensable.

Article Abstract:
Payrolling can help companies cut employment costs. In payrolling, a contracting company takes on responsibility for handling all aspects of payment for another company's employees. A payroller does not just print checks; it also handles taxes, disability and all other wage-related activities. The contracting company saves money and gains flexibility with little trouble. Many businesses could find payrolling a stabilizing factor.
