Debugging farm visits

Article Abstract:

The incidence of zoonoses in the UK has increased with the increase in educational and leisure visits to farms. Gastrointestinal zoonoses are the most common. Doctors reported 50,000 cases of campylobacter infection in 1997. Other zoonose outbreaks include Escherichia coli (E.coli) infections in several people who had visited a Nottinghamshire farm, and E.coli infections in visitors to the Glastonbury music festival, which takes place on a dairy farm. Risk management includes the provision of warning notices and handwashing facilities, and the removal of animal excreta from public areas.

Debugging buildings

Article Abstract:

One of the most effective ways of preventing Legionnaires' Disease outbreaks is to service the cooling systems of buildings on a regular basis and to avoid using cooling temperatures of between 20 and 50 degrees centigrade. Surprisingly, the highly infectious and deadly organism Legionella pneumophila does not cause any harm if it is swallowed but is particularly hazardous when inhaled in fine water sprays droplets. Health and safety staff are advised to use properly trained water systems service professionals to minimize risk of infection.

Plugging the gaps

Article Abstract:

Some observers suggest external occupational health consultancy services cannot provide a full service as they do not have a sufficient knowledge of the company. There will also be a tendency for them to offer the more attractive services and not those which are needed in the work environment. Some smaller companies will have to buy in consultancy because they are unable to afford to develop their own expertise. There is some concern the consultancy services are not accountable and management are not obliged to follow their advice.
