Article Abstract:
The proposed UK Data Protection Bill aims to allow businesses to collect and process data, with regard to the rights of individuals. The Trades Union Congress has called for the revised bill to sort out anomalies in the law, such as employers holding restricted files on employees. Employers should ensure they do not transgress legislation concerning disclosure of data to third parties and confidentiality and security of data is maintained. It has been predicted complying with data protection laws will cost over 1 billion pounds sterling. The new bill should be introduced by Oct 1998.

Article Abstract:
Employees in the UK work the longest hours in Europe, according to a survey by the Institute of Personnel and Development. The survey shows that some 2.7 million UK workers work more than 48 hours per week, of whom one quarter are self-employed. However, long hours increase the likelihood of workplace accidents and increase exposure to risk, while also causing psychosocial stresses within families. Because of such health and safety issues, the Council of the European Union adopted the Working Times Directive, based on best practice in Europe, in June 1994.
